Lately it seems that every time I get an email somewhere near the bottom the sender has spent time and careful consideration selecting a meaningful and heartfelt quote. The quote says as much about the sender as any information in the email. For example a recent email from a fellow training professional had the following quote:
"The principal goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done.- Jean Piaget
And from one of my college professors:
"Education is not to reform students or amuse them or to make them expert technicians. It is to unsettle their minds, widen their horizons, inflame their intellect, teach them to think straight, if possible."-Robert M. Hutchins
This second one really annoyed me as the quote was longer than the email. Also, should I be expected to read every quote? Obviously some quotes are better than others and I would much rather read a quote by Kiss Bassist Gene Simmons than say Bertrand Russell.
I personally do not have a quote line on my email. Moreover, given the variety of roles I play (manager, instructors, student, father, and husband) I'm not sure there really is one quote that would fit me. For that reason I have decided to quote myself. Sure I'm no Piaget but I've said some clever things in my life and so I offer these gems. Feel free to use any of them but be sure to give credit where credit is due.
